Overview
Located in Binh Thuan Province in southeastern Vietnam, Mui Ne is a resort area accessible from Ho Chi Minh City. It is widely known in the Asian region as a classic kitesurfing spot during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter. Characterized by a unique landscape where the sea, blessed with daily strong winds, coexists with vast sand dunes, it attracts many kitesurfers and tourists from all over the world.
Wind Seasons and Conditions
The main season is during the northeast monsoon from around November to March. It also possesses a thermal effect where the wind speed increases in the afternoon, bringing consistent strong winds of 20 to 30 knots. The wind direction at the main beach is Cross Onshore. The water is choppy with strong shore breaks, and it drops off deeply immediately upon entering the water.
As a Gear Development Base
Because it is not flat water, the hurdle is somewhat high for beginners, but it is highly suitable for Big Air practice. Leveraging the strong winds that blow daily, it also functions as a development and testing base for kite gear. Adi Conrad, the exclusive designer for Slingshot, is based here. He tested extensively with team riders like Jeremy Burlando to create the masterpiece Big Air kite, the “Code NXT.”
Usage of Surrounding Spots
Besides the main beach of Mui Ne, surf-style riders who prefer wave riding often use “Malibu Beach” on the east side, which gets more substantial waves. Additionally, attackers seeking flat water to avoid the intense chop often take day trips or move their base north to “Phan Rang,” which features a vast shallow lagoon protected by coral reefs.
Tourism and Lifestyle Beyond Kiting
The abundance of tourist attractions around the spots is another appeal of Mui Ne. At the massive sand dunes known as the “White Sand Dunes” and “Red Sand Dunes,” visitors can enjoy riding ATVs and sand sliding. Exploring nature, such as walking through the shallows of the “Fairy Stream” flowing between red limestone formations, is also popular. At night, it is a classic lifestyle for riders to gather at the seaside seafood food stalls called “Boke,” enjoying cheap local beer and BBQ with fresh seafood chosen straight from the tanks.
Access
In the past, a grueling 5 to 6-hour bus ride from Ho Chi Minh International Airport was mandatory. However, in recent years, the opening of a new highway has significantly reduced travel time to about 2.5 to 3 hours, making it a much more accessible spot than before.
