Mikaili Sol

Overview

Mikaili Sol is a professional kiteboarder of Brazilian and American descent, born in 2004 and raised in Preá, Ceará, Brazil. She began kiteboarding at age eight. Prior to entering the senior professional circuit, she dominated the youth divisions, winning four consecutive Junior World Championship titles. Today, she reigns as the undisputed queen of the sport, leading the world primarily in the Freestyle and Big Air disciplines.

Freestyle Dominance and Chasing Gisela’s Legacy

In 2018, at just 13 to 14 years old, she entered the elite tour of the WKC (World Kiteboarding Championships, the pinnacle of freestyle at the time, which later merged into the GKA under the authorization of World Sailing). She won every stop in Akyaka, Turkey, Dakhla, Morocco, and Cumbuco, Brazil, to claim her first world title.

With this victory at age 14, she became the youngest world champion in GKA/WKC Freestyle history. However, the record for the youngest world champion in overall kiteboarding history belongs to Gisela Pulido, who achieved the feat at age 10 and later competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Formula Kite class. Sol has long stated that breaking Gisela’s record of 10 world titles is a major career goal, and she continues to chase that legacy.

Sol maintained her overwhelming dominance, securing five Freestyle World titles in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. She has repeatedly shattered the technical limits of women’s freestyle. At the 2018 Dakhla event, she became the first woman in history to land a Double Heart Attack, scoring a perfect 10.00. She followed this with another historic milestone at the 2021 Cumbuco event, landing a Frontside 317—the first double handle-pass in a women’s competition—to earn yet another perfect 10.00.

Big Air and Multidisciplinary Success

Beyond freestyle, Sol has established elite status in the Big Air discipline. In 2022, she won the Qatar Airways GKA Big Air World Championships in Tarifa, Spain. That same year, at the Big Air Kite League (BAKL) in Tatajuba, Brazil, she successfully executed a Boogie Loop Board-off—a first in women’s competition—to take the win. In 2023, she defended her title, winning the Lords of Tram in Barcarès, France, and the Big Air World Championships in Tarifa, becoming a back-to-back Big Air World Champion.

After taking a temporary break from competition in 2024 to focus on rest and academics, she made a triumphant return at a Big Air event in Jericoacoara, Brazil, securing a dramatic victory by scoring another 10.00 on her final attempt.

Furthermore, in 2019, she entered the GKA Strapless Freestyle competition in her hometown of Preá. Despite having practiced strapless riding for only a few days, she showcased her extraordinary talent by defeating Marcela Witt in the final to claim the victory on her very first attempt.

Style and Influence

Having trained for years under the guidance of Fabio Ingrosso, her riding is characterized by highly technical maneuvers executed with immense power and amplitude. Stating that she doesn’t want to be confined to the box of just a freestyle or Big Air champion, but rather wants to showcase cool riding across all disciplines, her attitude continues to significantly push the progression and scoring standards of women’s kiteboarding.
