A tie-breaking method used to determine the ranking when multiple competitors have the same total score. In kiteboarding competitions, if riders are tied, their single best score within the heat is compared. If still tied, the second-best score is compared, and so on. If all counting scores are identical, the winner is determined by referring back to past heat results or overall event rankings, rewarding the rider who had a prior lead.
A historic example of this occurred during the finals of the 2018 GKA Air Games in Fehmarn, Germany. Carlos Mario and Jesse Richman were perfectly tied in overall points after a fiercely contested heat. The countback rule was applied, comparing their past victories and higher placements, which ultimately crowned Carlos Mario as the World Champion.
