Frontside

Overview and Characteristics

A universal term used in all board sports, serving as the opposite of “Backside.” It refers to a state or action where the rider approaches an object (wave or direction of travel) with their “chest (front)” facing it.

In wave riding, since the rider can constantly keep the face of the wave in full view, it is easier to time the breaking lip. This high visibility makes it the “standard” or more intuitive stance, allowing for deeper bottom turns and aggressive top actions.

Definitions in Surfing and Snowboarding

Surfing: Riding with your chest facing the face of the wave. For a regular-footed rider (left foot forward), riding a wave breaking to the right is considered frontside.

Snowboarding: In spinning, it refers to initiating the rotation with your chest turning towards the direction of travel first. For a regular footer, this means a counter-clockwise rotation.

The Ultimate Trap: The Rotation Direction is Opposite?

In kiteboarding freestyle, one of the most common points of confusion for beginners is the difference between a “Frontside Spin” and a “Front Roll.” Although both share the word “front,” not only are their physical axes of rotation different, but their actual **directions of rotation (twist) are entirely opposite**. This paradox is the biggest cause of confusion when learning tricks.

  • Frontside Spin (Horizontal Rotation): A spin where the chest opens towards the direction of travel. For a regular-footed rider, this results in a “counter-clockwise” rotation when viewed from above.
  • Front Roll (Vertical Rotation / Flip): A forward flip diving headfirst over the front leg. Because the rider must throw their back shoulder forward to initiate the flip, the rotational twist when viewed from above is “clockwise”—the exact opposite of a frontside spin.

Despite sharing the same “front” nomenclature, the fact that the body rotates in completely opposite directions makes understanding the mechanics of these tricks structurally challenging.

Representative Tricks

  • Frontside 180 / 360: Frontside rotations (horizontal spins) in the air.
  • 313: Raley to Frontside 360 (a handle-pass trick consisting of a Raley followed by a 360-degree frontside rotation).
  • Frontside 720: A highly technical, multi-rotation frontside spin.
