In kiteboarding competitions, the double elimination is a secondary tournament ladder held after the initial “single elimination.” All riders who were previously eliminated get a second chance to fight their way up a step-ladder format based on their single elimination results, aiming to overthrow the top seeds.
The winner of the single elimination waits at the very peak of the ladder in the grand final. If the challenger emerging from the double elimination wins this heat, it marks the first loss for the top seed. Because a rider must lose twice to be eliminated, this forces a “Super Final” to determine the ultimate champion.
Surviving this grueling format requires immense physical and mental endurance. Riders like Airton Cozzolino, Camille Delannoy, and James Carew are known for their dramatic comebacks through these consecutive heats. A legendary example of this endurance is Sebastian “Seb” Ribeiro’s performance at the 2019 GKA Mauritius event, where he powered through an astonishing seven consecutive heat wins in the double elimination to fight his way back to the podium.
