Overview
The archipelago nation of Cape Verde, located in the central Atlantic, particularly Sal Island, is known as one of the “holy grails” of kiteboarding. It is the home of legendary riders such as Mitu Monteiro, Airton Cozzolino, and Matchu Lopes, and has been the epicenter for the evolution of Strapless Kitesurfing. It is also famous as a frequent host of GKA Kite World Tour wave events, serving as a stage where the world’s top riders congregate.
Wind Season and Conditions
The main season runs from November to May, with the peak occurring between January and March. The North-East Trade Winds are consistent, typically ranging from 15 to 25 knots, though they can exceed 30 knots on good days.
- Ponta Preta: A world-class right-hand point break. It features perfect offshore winds, creating clean barrels and massive walls.
- Kite Beach: Located on the east side of the island with side-onshore wind. By using the choppy water as kickers, it provides an ideal environment for freestyle training and for beginners to intermediates.
Access and Local Rules
The main hub is the town of Santa Maria at the southern tip of the island.
- Ponta Preta Hazards: The waves break very close to the rocks, posing a serious risk of gear damage if a kite is dropped. Because the wind is offshore, relaunching a kite is difficult, making it essential to verify rescue availability. Wind Shadows often occur near the rocks, requiring advanced kite control.
- Respecting Locals: While pros from around the world gather here, local kids and riders maintain an exceptionally high level of riding. It is mandatory to strictly follow the Right of Way and maintain positive vibes in the water.
Riding Environment
Sal Island offers a rich diversity of terrain, allowing riders to enjoy completely different conditions in a single day. During GKA tours, Ponta Preta and Kite Beach are used as venues interchangeably depending on the wave conditions.
- Wave: Ponta Preta provides world-class point breaks with wave quality high enough to host WSL (World Surf League) events.
- Freestyle: Kite Beach features Cross Onshore winds, perfect for practicing Strapless Freestyle using the choppy surface.
Nearby Facilities and Shops
Numerous kite schools and shops are scattered around Santa Maria.
- Mitu & Djo Kite School: Managed by Mitu Monteiro.
- Kite Beach Kite School: A facility with direct beach access.
