Pumping (Planing)

Pumping is a riding technique that involves rhythmic weighting and unweighting on the board to prevent stalling and generate forward momentum.

This acceleration mechanism is primarily based on the law of action and reaction and the dynamic lift (planing) created by gliding over the water. The rider presses the board’s edge (rail) or fins firmly against the water surface, converting the resulting upward repulsive force into forward propulsion. By heavily weighting the board against the kite’s power and then suddenly unweighting, the board lifts closer to the water’s surface, minimizing hydrodynamic drag.

It is an essential skill for maintaining and increasing speed in light wind conditions or on weak sections of a wave. It is often distinguished from pumping, as the equivalent movement on a hydrofoil relies on a completely different fluid dynamics approach.
