Starboard tack is a sailing condition where the wind comes from the right side of the craft. In kitesurfing, it refers to riding with the right hand leading in the direction of travel.
This term is of critical importance in universal maritime rules for sailing and kitesurfing. When crossing paths with an approaching rider on a port tack (left hand leading), the rider on the starboard tack has the right-of-way. The starboard tack rider must maintain their current course and speed, while the port tack rider must yield by flying their kite lower downwind or changing direction.
This fundamental collision-avoidance rule is strictly enforced not only during competition heats but also in everyday freeriding. However, having the right-of-way does not permit intentionally dangerous approaches; riders must always maintain a safe distance depending on the conditions.
