Moby Dick

Overview and Structure

The Moby Dick is an unhooked trick that combines a Tantrum (a vertical Backroll initiated by catching the heelside edge) with a backside 360-degree handle pass. The trick is named after the legendary white whale from the novel “Moby Dick”.

Mechanisms and Tips

A standard Back Mobe involves carving hard on the edge and popping off the water to perform a Backroll, making it possible on flat water. In contrast, the Moby Dick is based on a Tantrum, which makes a self-initiated takeoff physically difficult. Therefore, using a wave as a ramp (kicker) is absolutely essential. The trick can only be successfully executed by accurately timing a perfectly formed kicker and relying on the power of the wave to launch upwards.

Derived Tricks

  • Moby 5 (Moby Dick 5): A highly difficult variation that adds an extra 180 degrees of rotation to the Moby Dick, totaling a 540-degree spin.

Notable Riders and Scenes

  • Alberto Rondina (Albi): One of the few riders to successfully land the extremely difficult “Moby 5” using a wave kicker, notably doing so at a competition in China.
  • Lou Waiman: A legendary rider with a wakeboarding background who brought unhooked handle-pass tricks like Mobes and KGBs into the kiteboarding scene around 1997.
