A tiebreak is a rule used in competitions to determine a winner when multiple athletes finish with the exact same total score.
In kiteboarding, tiebreak protocols vary depending on the organization. In the GKA, heat ties are resolved using a “countback” method, where the rider with the single highest-scoring trick is declared the winner. In events like Red Bull King of the Air (KOTA), ties are first broken by comparing overall impression scores, falling back to the highest single trick score if still tied. For overall season rankings, the most recent event result typically breaks the tie.
