Overview
Located in northwestern Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya is Asia’s premier flat-water paradise. Once a remote fishing village where smuggling occurred during the civil war, it has undergone a dramatic evolution with the introduction of kitesurfing. In 2005, it was an empty lagoon with nowhere to stay, but today it has transformed into a massive kite village lined with posadas and luxury apartments. In particular, eco-resorts like “Kitesurfing Sri Lanka,” built from scratch by local entrepreneurs Dil and Leo, have become enthusiastic community zones for backpackers and pros from around the world. Even when crises like terrorism occurred in Sri Lanka, the local community and pro riders united to ensure safety and have historically maintained positive vibes.
Wind Seasons and Local Life
The main season runs from May 15 to October 15, when the southwest monsoon brings strong winds. In the past, the sea was too rough for fishing during this time, leaving fishermen with nothing to do. However, with the spread of kitesurfing, they became employed as instructors and rescue boat staff, earning incomes surpassing fishing, which completely transformed the village economy. Today, the summer season alone generates an industry worth approximately 500 million rupees.
Additionally, the second season from late December to late February brings the northeast monsoon, making it a popular winter escape for those in the Northern Hemisphere. By utilizing hydrofoils and large kites, riders can enjoy sessions for almost 11 months of the year in this rare environment.
Main Spots (Flat Water and Waves)
- Kalpitiya Lagoon: The vast, shallow main spot surrounded by a massive sandbar. With mirror-like, ultra-flat water completely free of chop, it offers a perfect environment for everything from beginner lessons to professional freestyle training.
- Kappaladi: A small area that served as the initial base for kite development in Kalpitiya. It is less crowded than the main lagoon, allowing for a quieter riding experience.
- Vella Island: An uninhabited island accessed by boat. It is one of the world’s best flat-water spots, where the water surface becomes flat like a “puddle” even in strong winds. It is a legendary location where pro riders flock to film new tricks.
- Donkey Point: A wave spot located just a few minutes away from the flat lagoon on the open ocean (west) side. With clean side-onshore waves generated by the rough Indian Ocean, it is ideal for practicing strapless freestyle and wave riding.
Sri Lanka as the Heart of Kite Manufacturing
Beyond its fantastic riding spots, Sri Lanka is also the “heart of manufacturing” that supplies the world’s top kites. There are two massive kite factories in the country. “GSL (Global Sports Lanka)” is a completely closed shop that exclusively manufactures products for the mega-brand Duotone. On the other hand, “Aqua Dynamics” handles the kite manufacturing for major competing brands such as North, Core, and Eleveight. The quality of the global kite market is supported behind the scenes by Sri Lanka’s outstanding technology.
