pumping is a riding technique that generates continuous lift by rhythmically weighting and unweighting the front wing of a submerged hydrofoil.
This mechanism is based on a fluid dynamics approach, similar to a bird flapping its wings underwater. By intentionally changing the wing’s angle of attack through the rider’s weight shifting, a continuous pressure difference is created. This allows the rider to maintain and accelerate their foiled state above the water surface, even without the pulling power of a kite or a wave.
The physical principle is completely different from Pumping, which relies on striking the board directly against the water surface for repulsion, and thus requires much more delicate balance and timing.
