Regular Stance (or Regular Foot) refers to the standard riding position in board sports such as kitesurfing, surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding, where the rider stands with their left foot forward and their right foot near the tail. Because roughly 70 to 80 percent of board riders naturally prefer this stance, it is designated as “regular.” The opposite stance, riding with the right foot forward, is known as “goofy stance.”
In kitesurfing, riders continuously travel back and forth across the wind direction, meaning everyone must ride in both directions. However, a rider’s natural main stance—whether regular or goofy—greatly impacts their performance during critical moments, such as slashing vertical turns on a wave or executing explosive takeoffs for freestyle and Big Air maneuvers. Depending on the wind direction and swell angles, certain spots and ocean kickers favor regular footers who ride left foot forward.
Prominent kitesurfers who ride primarily in a regular stance include world-class freestyle and Big Air contender Liam Whaley, as well as Big Air legend Kevin Langeree. Meanwhile, legendary wave riders like Airton Cozzolino are famous for masterfully switching between regular and goofy stances to tear up waves from both sides with equal speed and power.
