Dakhla

Overview

Located in Western Sahara at the southern tip of Morocco, Dakhla is one of the global meccas for kiteboarding. Boasting both a vast lagoon and Atlantic point breaks, it caters to all styles, from freestylers who love flat water to wave riders seeking clean waves. It is a regular stop on the GKA Kite World Tour, frequently hosting Strapless Wave and Freestyle events.

Wind Season and Conditions

While the probability of wind is extremely high year-round, the best season is from April to September. The consistent North-East trade winds are enhanced by thermal effects, with wind speeds often hovering around 20 to 25 knots.

  • The Lagoon: A massive lagoon stretching for kilometers. Regardless of the tide, it provides a vast flat water area, making it ideal for Freestyle practice and beginner lessons.
  • West Point: A spot located near the lagoon’s exit. It features very clean, long right-hand breaking waves. The wind is often stronger here than in the lagoon, allowing for world-class riding in side-offshore conditions.

Access and Local Rules

Kite camps and hotels are scattered a few dozen minutes North by car from Dakhla Airport (VIL).

  • Kite Camp Stays: Many riders stay at hotels directly connected to the spots, such as Dakhla Attitude or West Point. This allows for immediate entry right in front of their rooms.
  • Nature Conservation: To protect the delicate desert ecosystem, there are local rules in place, such as restricting entry and exit to designated areas.

Riding Environment

Due to its topography, the area is suitable not only for kiteboarding but also for Wing foiling and Windsurfing.

  • Freestyle: Places like the Speed Spot within the lagoon offer mirror-flat water, making them perfect for practicing advanced tricks.
  • Wave: Riders can choose from a variety of wave conditions, ranging from beach breaks like Foum Labouir to the point break at West Point.

Nearby Facilities and Shops

The area is well-equipped with stay-in kite resorts offering full rental, school, and rescue services.

  • Dakhla Attitude: One of the most famous hubs located on the lagoon side.
  • West Point Dakhla: A luxury resort aimed at wave-focused riders.
  • Culture: In town, you can enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine (tagine and couscous) and mint tea, experiencing a unique atmosphere that blends Arab, Berber, and Spanish cultures.
