Upwind refers to the direction from which the wind is blowing, or the position situated against the wind. In wind-powered sports such as kitesurfing, sailing directly into the wind is physically impossible. Therefore, riders move upwind by maintaining a specific angle to the wind and traveling in a zigzag pattern, known as tacking.
It is treated as a fundamental term indicating course direction and positioning on the water, rather than merely an action. In freeriding, it is an essential concept for returning to the original launching point. In competitive scenarios, it is frequently used in contexts such as aiming for the “upwind mark” (a buoy placed upwind) or “maintaining the upwind line” to avoid drifting downwind in light wind conditions.
